Steven Cole MD

Magellan Consultant
Professor, Psychiatry – Stony Brook University Medical Center; Division Head of Medical

Magellan's NAVIGO services were developed by its staff of behavioral health experts, with the counsel of one of the industry's leading practitioners, Dr. Steven Cole. Dr. Cole pioneered a NAVIGO core component -‘ultra-brief personal action planning (UB-PAP),’ an innovative health coaching tool seamlessly linking self-management support, stage of change theory, and motivational interviewing. The Institute of Healthcare Improvement, the Bureau of Primary Healthcare, and the AMA use UB-PAP in their provider training programs. Peer review panels have invited Dr. Cole to the First International Meeting on Motivational Interviewing in Interlocken, Switzerland and the Employee Assistance Professionals Association meeting in Atlanta. His textbook, The Medical Interview: The Three Function Approach (3rd edition, in press), has sold more than 20,000 copies, is required in more than 22 US medical schools and has been translated into Japanese. Dr. Cole provides leadership for training and evaluating NAVIGO coaches, for program performance, for quality, and for research. Recently, Steve lost 20 pounds by following a popular online diet plan. Every month he makes a new personal action plan for his health as part of his training workshop for medical students at Stony Brook.
